This is the third post in a series that will discuss the recent updates to StorageCraft’s Recovery Environment. Be sure to check out parts one and two.
So you want to know more about the StorageCraft Recovery Environment – for Windows do you? Well, you’ve come to the right place. If you’re familiar with or have used the StorageCraft Recovery Environment in the past, you know it’s an intuitive and powerful tool for restoring entire systems to the same or to new hardware. The process is fairly straight forward. You boot off of a CD/DVD or USB drive attached to the target system. The StorageCraft Recovery Environment – for Windows loads the appropriate hardware drivers and provides a user interface which lets you backup, recover, or explore Windows systems. If you have exotic hardware you can inject drivers for your specific hardware directly into the Recovery Environment. If you need to make adjustments to disk partitions or connect to network resources, all of this can be done using the tools provided.
All of these functions exist in the new StorageCraft Recovery Environment – for Windows. The most notable difference is that instead of StorageCraft building the Recovery Environment for you in advance, Microsoft now requires customers to download the Microsoft Assessment and Deployment Kit (ADK) directly from their website. Don’t worry, we still want to make this an easy process and we’ve built a Recovery Environment Builder application which walks you through the steps of installing first the .NET 3.5 framework (if it’s not already installed) and second the Microsoft ADK to your local system. Just download the builder from our website and then install and launch the RE Builder application. The result will be an ISO disk image which can be burned to CD/DVD or USB. This bootable disk leverages the Windows 8.0 Preinstallation Environment and Windows driver libraries alongside our StorageCraft Recovery Environment application to provide you with the same utilities you know and love.
Because you are building the Recovery Environment you have the advantage of adding specific hardware drivers directly into this tool during the build process. To do this, simply click the “Add Driver” icon when you first open the RE Builder application. Don’t worry if you forget to add custom drivers during the build, you can always inject non-standard drivers after the Recovery Environment is running. This ability to add hardware drivers to the StorageCraft Recovery Environment – for Windows is one of its advantages.
Another advantage of the Recovery Environment – for Windows is the ability to finalize a StorageCraft HeadStart Restore process from inside the Recovery Environment. Keep in mind that the Recovery Environment will check for a valid ShadowProtect license in either the backup source or target. If the Windows version of the Recovery Environment doesn’t find a valid license you will be prompted for an access code which you can receive after contacting our support team. These functions existed in the legacy application and persist in the new version.
If you’re happy with what you’ve been using for all these years, then there’s no reason to change. Just download a copy of the Recovery Environment Builder and build your own copy of the StorageCraft Recovery Environment – for Windows today.
